We’re All Done (Or Are We?)

by steve

First the news that we actually do know for sure. We have completed all of the work required of us to be licensed for foster/adoptive care in Watauga County, NC!

This is such a relief! Finally, all of the paperwork is complete, we have finished our physical examinations, passed our TB tests (I studied hard for that one! hehe), and will be turning the final papers into DSS this week.

So now the waiting process begins. Waiting for the licensing to be finalized. And then waiting for a child.

Except…we might not actually be done with the whole process. And here’s where it gets interesting…!

While it’s true that we are done with the process for Watauga County, NC, it no longer remains clear whether we actually will be in Watauga County to foster/adopt!

In the last couple of weeks, I have had the opportunity to apply for a position in Abingdon, VA. It’s not too far from here — only about 90 minutes or so. But, it’s not Watauga County. Nor is it even North Carolina. It’s a different county in a different state.

We don’t know if I’ll get the job. (It is a music director position at Barter Theatre, a well-established and historically-significant company.) I’m qualified for it, and it appears that God is putting pieces into place, but there are still questions to be answered, and I still have to wait for the process, which could take a month or more.

This has come out of the blue, actually. We had no idea that this would even be a possibility.

And we have no idea what effect this will have on our foster/adoptive process. Theoretically, it’s possible that we will have to start completely from scratch in getting trained/licensed in Washington County, VA after we relocate there (if I get the job). Or there may be some way that the new county’s DSS would honor at least some of the training we have already completed.

We have no idea what this all will mean. But we know one thing for certain. We know that God led us to take this training and go through this process here in Watauga County. Even if we have to start over again from the very beginning, I do not believe it was in vain.

So we wait on several fronts…

Hello! Greetings from Henderson County, North Carolina! I found your blog through a mention at Long and Winding Road…my husband and I are just beginning the journey to become foster parents ourselves! I’ll be interested in following your path — no matter where you eventually wind up! Thank you for sharing! :)

    Renae,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Hopefully we’ll have more to share before too long, and I hope you’ll share your experiences, too.
